The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority has been notified of a number of products which pose a serious risk to consumers. The below details refer: Should your company retail, import or distribute the product in question, you are requested to notify GRTU without delays, so necessary action is taken as soon as possible. If you are aware of any person or company who is retailing, importing or distributing this product, kindly notify the undersigned so as to contact such person or company.

May we remind you of the obligations under the General Product Safety Act that manufacturers/ importers/ distributors of products on the market in Malta are required to report any incidents occurring and involving products they represent.

Notification 1: Batch number/Barcode: 8 000 000 006028

Wooden xylophone.

Dangers Details: Choking and Chemical

The product has small parts that can be easily detached and could be swallowed or inhaled by young children. Lead and chrome can migrate from the material that the figures are made from. The product does not comply with the Toy Safety Directive and the relevant European standards EN 71-1 and EN 71-3.

 

Notification 2:  Batch number/Barcode: 0 52329 90104 90-105 cm red heart-shaped balloons. Packaging: transparent foil bag with cardboard border; six original packs.

Dangers Details: Chemical

The product poses a chemical risk because it contains 0.0526 mg/kg of Nnitrosamines and 2.3283 mg/kg nitrosable substances which are classified as a category 2 carcinogen. The product does not comply with the national legislation and the Toy Safety Directive.

 

Notification 3: Batch number/Barcode: 4 019470 003134

Multi-coloured (white, blue, green, red, yellow and orange), soft plastic ball (approx. diameter 10cm). The product is sold in a white plastic net bearing a label with the brand name, the CE mark, the pictogram indicating that it is unsuitable for use by children under the age of three years and the warning: "Choking Hazard - Small parts. Not for children under 3 years".

Dangers Details: Chemical

The product poses a chemical risk because it contains 15.1% by mass bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). According to the REACH Regulation the phthalates DEHP, DBP and BBP are prohibited in all toys and childcare articles, while phthalates DINP, DIDP and DNOP are prohibited in toys or childcare articles that can be placed in the mouth by children.

 

Notification 4:

Batch number/Barcode: 26375006231000000100

Five red, heart-shaped balloons. Packaging: transparent foil with cardboard label in colour print on the upper side.

Dangers Details: Chemical

The product poses a chemical risk because it contains 0.083 mg/kg of Nnitrosamines and 2.34 mg/kg nitrosable substances which are classified as a category 2 carcinogen. The product does not comply with the national legislation and the Toy Safety Directive.

 

Notification 5:Key-ring in the form of a round photo frame with two arms and two legs. The arms are made from elastic wire with a green plastic covering and have yellow hands (approx. length 1.9cm). The legs are made from elastic wire with a bright pink plastic covering and have blue shoes on the end (approx. length 2.0cm). The product is sold unpacked.

The product poses a chemical risk because it contains 12.38% by mass bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and up to 21.88% by mass dibutyl phthalate (DBP). According to the REACH Regulation the phthalates DEHP, DBP and BBP are prohibited in all toys and childcare articles, while phthalates DINP, DIDP and DNOP are prohibited in toys or childcare articles that can be placed in the mouth by children.
